In 2012, UN Women Australia (Perth Chapter), the WA IWD Collaboration of peak women’s service organizations and the Australian Public Service Commission will be hosting this major fundraising event to support UN Women projects.

Sally Sara, the ABC’s dynamic Afghanistan Correspondent will be the major international speaker and Babs McHugh, the ABC’s Resources Reporter and great personal supporter of the event, will be the MC.  With excellent speakers, valuable networking opportunities, raffles and entertainment, this event promises to inspire, educate and raise a smile!  What a positive way to start the day!

In addition, you may wish to share the excitement and purchase a seat that can be donated to women and girls who cannot afford to attend the event.  If donated seat bookings are received before 24 February, this will give time for the IWD Breakfast Committee to arrange for the seats to be distributed to women and girls via a number of worthy organizations.

Guest Speaker: Sally Sara
ABC Afghanistan Correspondent

Sally Sara is an award winning journalist and foreign correspondent with the AB C. She has reported from more than 30 countries including Iraq, Lebanon and Sierra Leone.

Sally has spent the past year covering the news from the frontline of the war in Afghanistan. During her career, she has broken the glass ceiling, as the first female correspondent appointed to the AB C’s Africa, South Asia and Kabul bureaus.

Sally has written for The New York Times and The Boston Globe and is the author of the best selling biography, ‘Gogo Mama.’

Sally has been named South Australian Young Journalist of the Year and Queensland Journalist of the Year. She has won United Nations Media Peace Awards and medals at the New York Festival Radio and Television Awards. She has been a finalist in the Walkley Awards for Journalism, six times.

Sally grew up in the small town of Port Broughton in South Australia. When she’s not reporting, she enjoys running and was a silver medalist at the Australian Masters Athletics Championships.

In 2011, Sally was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia for service to journalism and the community.

MC: Babs McHugh

A graduate in Broadcasting from the WA Academy of Performing Arts, Babs has been with the AB C for over 10 years and currently presents the Resources Beat on ABC Rural Radio. Her relaxed style and sharp wit have made her a popular, entertaining MC. She was
one of Australia’s first female shotfirers and toiled as a deckhand on trawlers in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Babs has been a great personal supporter of UN Women and International Women’s Day.
